Is There an Easy Way to Figure Out Decimal Equivalents?

For those who've forsaken their algebra teachings, here's a quick refresher course. First off, the bottom of a fraction tells how many pieces something has been divided into (example: 1/16" tells us that we're talking about one part (the "1") of an inch that is split into 16 total parts).

With that in mind, if you divide 16 into 1, you'll get .0625. So 1/16" is equal to .0625 of an inch. Want to know the decimal equivalent of 5/16"? Multiply five times .0625 and you'll have the answer (.3125 for those who are playing along). It's very simple once you get the hang of it.

Here's some examples of the most common fractions and a quick reference chart to boot.

1/64" = 1" divided by 64 = .015625"

1/32" = 1" divided by 32 = .03125"

1/16" = 1" divided by 16 = .0625"

1/8" = 1" divided by 8 = .125"

1/4" = 1" divided by 4 = .25"

1/2" = 1" divided by 2 = .5"
